Men’s & Women’s Formal Shirts Differences

Manufacturers of clothes adapt their designs and patterns to the latest trends in clothing and formal shirts are always in trend. There is innovation, new things are being made, and old things are starting to change. People’s “favorite” things are also changing because of these changes. TrendFreak has a collection of both men’s and women’s shirts.

Well, fashion trends can come and go, but formal shirts can never be replaced by anything. Nothing is as essential as a great formal shirt, which is worthless and a must-have for all sorts of events.

But how many of you can tell the difference between male and female formal shirts? Particularly ones that appear to be unisex. You are partly right when you say that the only difference is the size, but many more things make clothes for men and women different.

Trying to determine what makes women’s and men’s shirts unique can be a frustrating experience at times. Don’t worry, and today we will discuss the differences between men’s and women’s formal shirts by looking closely. Let’s look at one thing at a time.

Formal Shirts

Shape

Men’s formal shirts typically have a straight up and down shape. The sleeves and shoulder area both slope downward from the collar in a downward motion. A men’s shirt’s construction is to offer a cozy fit at the neck, over the shoulders, and around the sleeves. Since most formal shirt is cut straight, they should hang comfortably over the chest. Men’s formal shirts don’t have extra tailoring at the waist because the average man’s body isn’t defined.

Women’s formal shirts are cut very differently than men’s, mainly because of women’s separated body structure. Women’s shirts are made to have a much smaller waist than men’s shirts. This is likely the most significant difference. This gives a shape to the natural female body and makes it fit better. Basically, the slimmer waist also gets rid of loose fabric that bunches up there.

Cutting

Men’s formal shirts are cut and sewn straight from top to bottom, with no shaping or styling. On the other hand, women’s shirts are cut and sewn to fit the wearer’s shape.

One significant feature of women’s shirts is they are curvy. Thus, they are sewn straight from the top and then curve in from the waist. Some women’s shirts are also sewn with darts to help shape them and make them fit better.

Men’s shirts aren’t sewn this way, but some may be very tight and make a person who is the same size as the shirt look like they fit well. This doesn’t mean that it’s curvy like a women’s shirt; it just means that it’s sewn more tightly to fit the correct size.

The sleeves are another big difference between shirts for men and women. Women’s clothes usually have tighter sleeves that fit closer to the arm. Also, if the shirt has short sleeves, the length of the sleeves will be just a few inches from the seam under the arm. Men’s clothing is also made with wider shoulders and sleeves that fit more loosely. If the shirt has short sleeves, the sleeves are around the middle of the arm, close to the elbow.

Fabric

Men’s and women’s formal shirts are usually made of different fabrics, which is probably the slightest difference and the one that people forget about the most. Most men’s t-shirts are made o fabrics that are thicker and rougher. Because the designs are different, this can be very uncomfortable in women’s shirts around pressure points like the waist or armpits.

So, women’s shirts are often made from thinner, lighter fabrics which will feel softer on the skin and will be less rough. Also, these types of fabrics are more breathable, which means more air can move through them and keep people from feeling too hot or stuffy.

Chest

Remember how the cut and shape of men’s shirts were called “straight up and down”? The chest is the same. When the shirt is the right size, it hangs down from the shoulder, and the design doesn’t need any more changes.

On the other hand, women’s shirts differ significantly from this.

Especially in formal shirts, women’s busts are considered by adding extra space or allowance in the chest area. This is done so that the woman’s body naturally looks better and the shirt feels more comfortable.

Buttons

Buttons are one example of a persistent gendered fashion trend that adds unnecessary complexity to women’s clothing. The buttons are on different sides depending on whom the shirt or jacket is wearing.

A woman’s shirt has buttons and buttonholes in different places than a male’s. The buttonholes are on the right, and the female buttons are on the left. For males, it’s the other way around.  Even though most people are right-handed, men’s shirts are the only ones with buttons on the right side.

Prints and colors

Even though formal shirts shouldn’t have bright colors and big prints, printed formal shirts seem to be taking over fashion.  Prints for women tend to be based on flowers and other feminine things, and they use light and attractive colors. But most prints on men’s shirts are simple and small. White, pastel, and light shades of blue are some desired colors for men’s formal shirts while most women’s shirts come in maroon, violet, and different shades of pink.

Difference Between Unisex and Women’s Shirts

The fit of a unisex shirt and a women’s shirt is very separate. A common mistake is to think that a men’s cut is the same as a unisex cut. The cut is similar but not exactly the same.

There are many differences in the shape of women’s formal shirts and unisex shirts. One that’s made for women will have the right shape to fit around her curves. Women’s shirts don’t have the straight cut that unisex shirts do, so they tend to fit around the hips and show off a woman’s shape. Many younger women prefer women’s fits to unisex fits because of straight cut’s big and bulky look.

Similar to men’s shirts, unisex shirts have straight seams. Plus, the sleeves are usually bigger and longer, even if the shirt has short sleeves. But unisex sizes tend to run a bit smaller than men’s sizes, so people who like men’s fit might have to order a larger size if they want to buy unisex clothing.

These are some of the essential distinctions between men’s and women’s formal shirts. We sincerely hope this helps you find the perfect shirt for you.
